Socialization of kittens is important to their future success in life. The kittens at River Valley Maine Coon are handled daily. It is important to hold them, play with them and talk to them, although they are protected from outside exposure to pathogens as much as possible until their vaccinations are complete. For example, if a cat has returned from a show, we take extra precautions to quarantine the show cat for the protection of the kittens. Once their vaccinations are complete, they will have more adventures into the world. This is a great video on how to socialize and why is it so important.

I am currently preparing Dottie and Mysti to show. Today they went to the vet for a health check and for their rabies vaccine. Their first show is about four weeks away, and since they are fully vaccinated, I am going to be taking them to a lot of new places. For example, I will take them to Petco so they can experience automatic doors, new smells, and etc. A lot of people think about getting their dogs "environmentally sound" but maybe not so much with a cat. It is very important! Of course, you would have your dog on a leash - I will also have Dottie and Mysti on a harness. They are already used to them so that won't be an issue.
